NCEO Atmospheric Composition

National Centre for Earth Observation
Abstract
The NCEO Atmospheric Carbon Programme aims to develop an integrated approach to the analysis of satellite measurements in order to provide new information on atmospheric composition and aerosols for air-pollution forecasting and testing climate models. There are large gaps in our understanding of the interactions between climate change and the trace gases and aerosols which are components of the atmosphere. These include the extent to which changes in climate will affect air pollution near the ground. Filling these gaps has been identified as a high priority for research by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The challenge is to use new EO data to investigate processes which determine the atmospheric distributions of trace gases and aerosols in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, their links to climate, pollution and air quality. The goal of this part of the work is to provide new information on atmospheric composition for air-pollution forecasting and testing climate models through an integrated approach to the analysis of satellite measurements. Our priorities include: a) to use satellite observations in a new, integrated approach to provide data on trace gases and aerosols in the troposphere and lower stratosphere; b) to improve quantitative understanding of their distributions and emissions and the representation of relevant processes in global chemistry-transport models by exploiting the new data; c) to contribute to national and European initiatives to establish new operational applications for satellite data to monitor pollution and forecast air quality.

Description | Richards et al. (ACP, 2013) present an analysis of the Mediterranean summer tropospheric ozone maximum as simulated by models and as observed by the GOME-2 satellite instrument. GOME-2 data was produced with the RAL scheme whose development within NCEO is led by R. Siddans. The paper demonstrates the quality of the GOME-2 retrieval compared to TES. Palmer, Fraser, et al, University of Edinburgh, 2014: (1) We have shown the relative scientific worth of new satellite observations of methane from GOSAT. (2) In a wider collaboration we looked at the ability of MIPAS to observe the transport of biomass burning outflow in the upper troposphere. (3) In work conducted in 2013 but published in 2014 we show the current (im)maturity of GOSAT CO2 to infer surface fluxes (4) We are beginning to show how we can integrate satellite data with aircraft and surface data to understand tropospheric photochemistry (NERC BORTAS + NCEO scientists) Chipperfield, Richards, Wilson, et al, University of Leeds, 2014: As part of a study (led by Anja Schmidt, UoL) on volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfate aerosol concentrations at flight altitudes over the North Atlantic flight corridor, we have use OMI SO2 satellite observations to test the UK Met Office's NAME dispersion model's ability to simulate the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in 2010. We find that the NAME model does a good job at reproducing the spatial distribution of SO2 from the volcano, but generally underestimates the peak SO2 concentrations observed by OMI. This work is currently being written up for publication. Remedios, Moore, and Graves, University of Leicester, 2014: (1) Comparison of CityScan data with other DOAS instrument (2) Reprocessing of multi-year MIPAS science data shows strong seasonal cycles in key volatile organic compounds including PAN, C2H2, C2H6 and HCOOH (3) Confirmation of secondary production of HCOOH within boreal biomass burning plumes observed with IASI |
Exploitation Route | Palmer, Fraser et al, Edinburgh, 2014: (1) Encourage use of data for use in policy development. (2) Using satellite data to quantify the role of long-range transport of surface air pollutants (4) Provides input to national governments who want to develop effective measurement networks. Chipperfield, Richards, Wilson, et al, Leeds, 2014: Validation of the NAME model's ability to simulate SO2 from volcanic eruptions may lead to it being used to provide information to the VAAC (Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres) for determining airspace closures for commercial aircraft during future eruptions |
