The Facility for Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space (CEMS)
Description | 2012-2013: The NCEO EO Informatics Theme hosts data and provides data services, primarily for the UK Earth Observation (EO) Community, but with users from diverse disciplines, organisations and geographic areas. Over the last year, nearly 300 identifiable users actively downloaded EO data from our archive, our EO data holdings have increased to 300 TB, and the first users have been accessing the CEMS facility (Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space) for data processing and analysis alongside the data. The largest fraction of our users comes from the UK (71%), but others come from Europe (9%) and Worldwide (17%). While most of our users (69%) are based in universities, we also support users in government (15%), NERC (6%), commercial sector (3%) and schools (1%). In summer 2012, we launched a new computing system (CEMS) consisting of storage and compute funded by significant capital investment from UKSA (UK Space Agency). CEMS has been established in collaboration with academic and commercial partners in the International Space Innovation Centre (ISIC) at Harwell (now merged into the Satellite Applications Catapult), and supports both academic and commercial communities by providing access to data, processing and expertise for climate and environmental research, as well as for new Earth Observation related technologies and services in the commercial sector. CEMS is closely coupled to its sister facility, JASMIN, deployed by NCAS, which is specifically targeted at supporting the joint analysis of weather and climate data by the academic community and Met Office staff. Together, JASMIN and CEMS are designed to support data analysis by the UK and European climate and earth system science communities; and to provide flexible access for the climate impacts and earth observation communities to complex data and services. 2013-2014: Earth Observation and other relevant datasets in the NERC data centres operated by CEDA have been made available to users worldwide. In the last year, 321 users downloaded 2.6TB of Earth Observation Data in 170,000 files. These users were based in UK (64%), Europe (10%) and beyond, spanning universities (67%), government (15%) and other, including commercial, applications, across 15 research domains. The JASMIN-CEMS data facility was awarded approx £7M capital funding from BIS e-infrastructure investment, enabling expansion to 12 TB online storage, 4000 processing cores, offline tape systems and development of a cloud environment. The expanded infrastructure will support users in EO and Climate Science to analyse and process environmental "Big Data" for a wide range of applications Over 10 new EO datasets were added to the CEDA archives for use by NCEO and the wider science and environmental data user community We worked closely with the UK Satellite Applications Catapult to deliver CEMS the facility for Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space. Collaboration on CEMS will enable exploitation of NERC data for innovative applications in the commercial sector. |
Exploitation Route | The EO data and services we provide can be accessed by users across a range of disciplines and sectors to develop new services, information or tools for scientific or commercial applications in climate and environment.
