Towards understanding interactions between Sustainable Development Goals: the role of environment-human linkages
in Sustainability Science
| Description | 1) Synthesis and review of research evidence and innovations relating to environment-human interactions published in the last 10 years explored the specific relevance of these interactions for each individual Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and for the relationships among the Goals has shown for the first time that environment-human interactions are vital in achieving all Sustainable Development Goals. 2) Identified 20 relationships among SDGs where human-environment interactions are likely to be most critical to meeting these goals. 3) Developed a matrix method to assess relationships among SDGs which allows focussing on different perspectives, e.g. human-environment interactions. 4) Helped identify major research and innovation gaps related to human-environment interactions that need to be address to achieve all SDGs. |
| Exploitation Route | Our report should enable the Towards a Sustainable Earth initiative to target its support effectively and provide advances that help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The outputs are being taken forward by NERC, the Rockefeller Foundation, ESRC and other research funders worldwide to inform and guide future funding calls planned by the Towards a Sustainable Earth initiative. |

| Description | Our findings from the one report that were permitted to release are being used by both research funders and policy makers. Researcher funders have launched a major new international research initiative, the Towards a Sustainable Earth (TaSE) initiative. The TaSE is a multilateral funding partnership between UK Research & Innovation councils: NERC, the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Japan Science & Technology Agency, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Department of Biotechnology, India, and the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, Formas. The TaSE initiative aims to fill the research and innovations gaps to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The TaSE funding call was launched in July with closing date in August 2018, more information here https://nerc.ukri.org/research/partnerships/international/overseas/tase/ao-tase-he/ Funding has been awarded to 8 projects, as announced in February 2019 https://nerc.ukri.org/press/releases/2019/07-tase/ Policy makers are beginning to consider the relationships among SDGs and particularly the important role of human-environment interactions at these intersections of SDGs, which we highlighted in our report. Policy makers have begun to rethink how governance systems and institutions need to be refreshed to address SDG interlinkages and the human-environment interactions more fully to achieve the SDGs. Our work is in the process of impacting both a new funding initiative and rethinking the policy institutions which will ultimately result in benefits to the environment, humans and human wellbeing and more sustainable life on Earth. |

| PI Contribution | Building on the work from the "Global Goals Mapping: environment-human landscape" project, we (Joseph Alcamo, Fiona Marshall, Jorn Scharlemann and a post-doctoral researcher) are now using the methods developed, i.e. the impact matrix, and apply this to country case studies with funding from the University of Sussex/Sussex Sustainability Research Programme. |
| Collaborator Contribution | Jorn Scharlemann is contributing expertise and advice about the impact matrix to this new collaboration. |
| Impact | Collaboration just starting 1/1/2020. |

| Results and Impact | Co-organised a 3-day roundtable discussion on the importance of interlinkages among Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at Wilton Park together with Wilton Park, an executive agency of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the British Council. 58 international, multi-sectoral stakeholders attend involving participants from governments, businesses, financial institutions, researchers, civil society, lawyers and representatives of marginalised people. The roundtable has formed the seed of a community working and acting on interactions among SDGs. We are writing a statement that will be taken to the United Nations High Level Political Forum in July 2018 when SDGs will be reviewed. Overall the roundtable has increased interest in SDG interactions and their importance |
