| Description | Key findings from the Western Channel Observatory (WCO) include: 1) Better understanding of what causes the "classic" annual spring bloom. 2) Understanding what the impacts are from extreme events, e.g. high rainfall in 2012 associated with an anomalously long diatom bloom and the winter storms of 2013-14, which transported alien species from large distances into the area, which affect the food web. 3) In relation to 2 above, many of the plankton species appear to have inbuilt resilience to major fluctuations both in the amount and the seasonal timing of their food, whereas the benthic (sea bed) system appears to very sensitive with rapid responses in activity and changing species composition, responding to pulses of fresh material that falls from the blooms above. Extreme climatic fluctuations are suggested to increase in future in association with rapid climate change, and the long time series and intensive benthic and pelagic time series allow us to understand the mechanisms by which these events propagate through the food web. Key findings from the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT: http://www.amt-uk.org) programme include: 1) Continued measurements of aerosol optical thickness, essential for understanding the Earth's radiation budget. 2) Collaborative exercises between PML and Oregon State University supported a NASA aircraft field campaign which took simultaneous LIDAR measurements with ship derived data. This has resulted in novel findings relating to the carbon content of phytoplankton cells. 3) We have determined the size spectra of phytoplankton which is a critical metric in determining the flow of carbon and energy through the different trophic levels. 4) AMT data, together with satellite and model data, have been used to develop a new method to dynamically (temporal and spatial dimensions) determine the extent of oceanic provinces. |

| Description | This funding supports both the Western Channel Observatory (WCO) and Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme. Both the WCO and AMT help in the leverage of other funding (commissioned research projects) and have delivered significant numbers of academic publications. The WCO is one of the longest time-series in Europe and provides real-time data to the UK Met Office and data from one of the buoys was used to illustrate the impact of the winter storms of 2013-14 to the public via the media. Data analyses contribute to the ICES report on Ocean Climate. The WCO has also provided a platform for the testing of technology with PML working with manufacturers and developers of instrumentation, thus leading to economic benefit. A key role of the WCO is as a biodiversity reference site and data from the site were incorporated in the Marine Climate Change Impact Partnership report card, used by policy makers. AMT's uniqueness lies in it regularly traversing remote and understudied areas of the Atlantic ocean. The extended range of the AMT through contrasting ocean provinces has allowed the development of new methods and techniques for measuring key trace substances in both the atmosphere and ocean, and to further understanding of the cycling of carbon, iron and nitrogen. AMT also provides the opportunity to validate, again across a wide range of ocean provinces, visible ocean colour sensors and has led to the development of accurate satellite maps of primary production. PML has worked with NASA scientists in this area and will continue collaborations with the European Space Agency too with the launch of the Sentinel series of satellites. Collaborations with NASA extend to using AMT data to understand the Earth's radiation budget. AMT also acts as a training and collaborative platform for scientists and students from universities and institutes across the world. |

| Description | A new instrument was developed for the measurement of greenhouse gases (CO2/CH4/N2O) dissolved in seawater. This instrument integrates a cavity ring down spectrometer, showerhead equilibrator and associated electronics, water- and gas-handling hardware and gas standards. The instrument is automated to work in "underway" mode on research vessels. Compared to existing instrumentation, this provides increased sample throughput (data acquisition every 10 seconds compared to hourly) without compromising accuracy and precision. |

| Description | A new instrument was developed for the spectrophotometric determination of seawater pH using the meta-cresol-purple dye (MCP). The automated system integrates a high precision burette, spectrophotometer and thermometer with a custom-built light source. Data reduction is performed with a custom script in R (r-project.org). The accuracy of the system is calculated as better than 0.003 pH units when compared with pH calculated from independent measurements of Alkalinity and Inorganic Carbon in seawater. |

| Title | A 26-year, weekly time series of the plankton at the L4 site |
| Description | March 2013 marked the 25th year of near-continuous weekly observations at the L4 monitoring site 12 miles south of Plymouth. The sampling is ongoing and publically-available data on a wide range of parameters (see URL) data are sent to BODC every year. With the help of autonomous buoys which capture very short timescale (hourly-scale) events and as part of the wider Western Channel Observatory, the pelagic system from physics and nutrients up to fish are being intensively monitored. The weekly data have been analysed within weeks of collection and Rachel Harmer (PML) has constructed a user-friendly L4 relational database in Access. We supply regular requests for this valuable time series, ranging from undergraduate projects up to international time series collation initiatives. The high resolution time series are particularly valuable for model validation. The database is currently being used to underpin a Special Issue of Progress in Oceanography devoted to the Western Channel Observatory. |

The L4 site was also selected as one of a dozen sentinel sites for on-going monitoring under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive to chart progress towards/away from "Good Environmental Status". The existing plankton time series data have been uploaded to a data tool to monitor the various indicators involved with this. | Title | A global bio-optical database derived from Biogeochemical Argo float measurements within the layer of interest for field and remote ocean color applications |
| Description | The database here presented includes quality-controlled bio-optical and biogeochemical variables derived from autonomous profiling Biogeochemical Argo float measurements, and supports field and remote ocean color applications. Data represent the first optical depth (i.e., the layer of interest for satellite remote sensing) and have been collected between October 2012 and January 2016, around local noon, in several oceanic areas encompassing the diversity of ocean's trophic environments. In addition to the first optical depth (as derived from the in situ measured depth of the euphotic layer), the presented database is compiled with data of diffuse light attenuation coefficients of photosynthetically available radiation and downward irradiance at 3 wavelengths (380, 412 and 490 nm), chlorophyll a concentration, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, and particle light backscattering at 700 nm. Associated errors to each variable are also reported. |

| Description | The presented database includes 0-1000 m vertical profiles of bio-optical and biogeochemical variables acquired by autonomous profiling Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats. Data have been collected between October 2012 and January 2016, around local noon, in several oceanic areas encompassing the diversity of ocean's trophic environments. The database includes profiles of downward irradiance at 3 wavelengths (380, 412 and 490 nm), photosynthetically available radiation, chlorophyll a concentration, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, and particle light backscattering at 700 nm. All variables have been quality controlled following specifically-developed procedures, that aimed to support biogeochemical and bio-optical applications at the global scale. Data corruption by biofouling and any instrumental drift has also been verified. Moreover, to allow users for different biogeochemical applications, vertical profiles of chlorophyll a and particle light backscattering at 700 nm have been presented before and after advanced processing (e.g., non-photochemical quenching correction, identification of spikes). Vertical profiles of temperature and salinity associated to these bio-optical data are also provided although they have been only quality-controlled for sensor issues related to bio-fouling and instrumental drift. |

| Description | Fresh seawater samples were collected in clean 250 mL polycarbonate bottles using a Seabird CTD system containing a 24 bottle rosette of 20 L Niskin bottles from 200 m to the surface at predawn and solar noon CTD casts. Samples were stored in a refrigerator and analysed within 2 hours of collection. Fresh samples were measured using a Becton Dickinson FACSort flow cytometer which characterised and enumerated Prochlorococcus sp. and Synechococcus sp. (cyanobacteria) and pico- and eukaryote phytoplankton, based on their light scattering and autofluorescence properties. The resulting data provide information on the abundance of marine microbes in the sunlit upper ocean in the Atlantic from approx. 50 degrees north to 50 degrees south and form part of an ongoing time series, which began in 1995. |

| Description | Vertical profiles of Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) and downward irradiance (Ed) at 3 wavelengths (380, 412 and 490 nm) are routinely acquired by autonomous Bio-Argo floats. The database here presented includes radiometric profiles that have been quality-controlled using a specifically developed procedure for real-time distribution of data. The procedure is aimed at verifying only the shape of profiles. In each profile, dark signal, atmospheric clouds, spikes and wave focusing are flagged in a way compliant with the Argo real-time data management system. These data are therefore totally adapted to derive optical quantities such as the diffuse light attenuation coefficients. No quality control on the measured irradiance quantity is performed, which would require development of delayed-mode quality-control procedures. |

It is also present in 2011 and 2012 where the samples were run using the newest flow cytometer at PML - data still to be supplied. Discrimination is down to better measurement of forward light scatter with the new flow cytometer (a BD Accuri C6). |

| Title | SST collected by surfers in the southern UK and western Ireland between 2014 and 2017 |
| Description | This dataset consists of sea surface temperature (SST) data collected by recreational surfers around the southern UK and Western Ireland coastline over the period from 5th January 2014 to 8th February 2017. These data were collected as part of a research project supported by Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Over the study period, the recreational surfers collected 297 independent samples of SST. The surfers were equipped with a UTBI-001 Tidbit V2 Temperature Data Logger and a Garmin etrex 10 GPS. The Garmin etrex 10 device was used to extract GPS information (latitude and longitude) for each surf. The Tidbit V2 temperature logger was attached, using cable-ties, at mid-point to the leash of the surfboards to ensure continuous contact with seawater when surfing, measuring temperature in the top metre of the water column. Roughly every 6 months over the study period, the Tidbit V2 temperature loggers were rigorously compared with a VWR1620-200 traceable digital thermometer (with an accuracy of 0.05 degrees C at the range of 0 to 100 degrees C) at 1 degree C intervals from 6 to 25 degrees C using a PolyScience temperature bath. Over the study period, all sensors performed within the manufacturers technical specifications. A piecewise regression to model was used to correct any Tidbit V2 temperature data collected to remove systematic biases between sensors, such that the errors in each sensor were within the accuracy of VWR1620-200 traceable digital thermometer. Temperature data were collected at 10 second intervals during each surfing session. The data were processed to remove any data collected before and after entering the water and SST were extracted by computing the median of the remaining data. Standard deviations on the remaining data are also provided to give an index of SST variability during each surf session. |

| Description | A Catalogue of Biodiversity Indicators useful for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) was developed by the DEVOTES FP7 Project with the aim of providing the basis for assessing the environmental status of European seas. It is available online through the DEVOTool 0.64 software application that allows navigating a database of indicators related to the following MSFD descriptors: biological biodiversity, non-indigenous species, food webs, and seafloor integrity. The catalogue (v.6) contains over 500 indicators used by different initiatives, in national and international contexts. A comprehensive overview of these indicators is given: descriptions, data requirements, developmental status, geographical coverage and applicable habitats, biodiversity components and descriptors targeted, and related human pressures. The DEVOTool provides a query and analysis function for browsing the metadata, extracting and ranking lists of indicators best fulfilling pre-set criteria; enabling users to search, for example, for indicators suitable to fill in an identified gap or address a particular pressure in a marine area. The major strengths and gaps of the indicator set (at EU level) allow to focus the development of new indicators where it is most urgently needed, and to foster transfer of know-how across marine regions. |

The aim was to celebrate the value of marine time series and was timed to mark the 30th anniversary of weekly sampling at the Plymouth L4 site. Invitations reached several hundred people and over 100 attended on the day. A series of science talks and posters throughout the day presented the value of time series from across Europe as well as L4, and a lunchtime series of tours showed members of public and other interested parties the newly refurbished labs. Anniversary mugs and other merchandise were available. |

| Results and Impact | Attended the United Nations in New York, attending the preparatory meeting for Sustainable Development Goal 14. This is the part of the UN sustainability agenda that focuses on protecting life under water through ocean sustainability. During the meeting, discussions are underway about what themes the world should work within to improve the sustainability of ocean life into the future, and that of living marine resources, under so many threats such as pollution, ocean acidification and illegal, unregulated and unreported fisheries. Raised awareness of how such aims cannot be delivered without actions that consider the profound effect of a multi-stressor ocean under climate change. That is, SDG14 is tightly linked to SDG13 which focuses on climate change. More importantly, at a time when solutions for a fast changing ocean are badly needed, Ana hopes to raise awareness about tools that the scientific community, a major group of stakeholders of the ocean, has already developed. These tools can enable action to meet this challenge and specifically through climate ready marine spatial plans. Gave a short talk today on the topic at a side event organized by the Ocean & Climate Platform, a think thank promoting ocean sustainability under climate change, and will raised the topic throughout the meeting, including direct engagement with co-facilitators of this UN goal. |

| Results and Impact | COP22 was the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22), held alongside the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 12), at Bab Ighli, Marrakech, Morocco. Both were held as part of the The United Nations Climate Change Conference, in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This event is a world stage where global leaders come together under the umbrella of the UNFCCC to align their national efforts to combat climate change, and the wider event is attended by science, industry, NGO's and civil society. Because of this, COP is a global stage within which research aligned with ocean research and climate change can be widely disseminated, and knowledge-exchange (KE) promoted. This was seen as a potentially great dissemination platform for NERC research undertaken within the Marine Ecosystems Research Programme (MERP), and a great way to raise the profile of Dr Ana Queiros, who is a mid-career senior scientist and a Co-I within the programme. Ana therefore attended COP22 as a representative of the MERP programme, and as part of the PML delegation to the event, which also included Dr Carol Turley, OBE (PML fellow) and Thecla Keizer (PML head of Marketing), joining colleages Dr Phil Williamson (UEA, NERC) and the team form the German Ocean Acidification Porgramme BioAcid. PML has attended COP since 2009. At that time few delegates even considered the link between climate and the ocean, its ecosystems, its role in the climate systems and the services it provides human society. This has changed considerable, ocean acidification is now recognised as a slow onset event (Cancun agreement at COP16, Mexico, 2010), the ocean and its ecosystems are now mentioned in the Paris Agreement (COP21, 2015) and it is very evident that more and more delegates are considering ocean impacts as they move forward with its implementation. This is at least in part due to the science outreach provided by PML. These efforts have been previously funded in full by the UK Ocean Acidification research programme in addition smaller funding/in-kind contributions from a consortium of other programmes and research institutes (EU-EPOCA, EU-MedSeA, German-BIOACID, US-Scripps, IAEA's OA-ICC) led by PML. PML is now recognised as a significant science-evidence contributor at these conferences. Recognition of the role of the ocean within the COP process, and the IPCC, has been actively sought through PML's involvement in past years. This year, a whole day was dedicated to the ocean at COP, though the Oceans Action day, organised by the Global Ocean Forum and within which MERP results were also presented. In this day, 400 high-level participants from around the world were brought in to advance oceans and climate change issues and to pledge concrete actions in support of the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal number 14, which is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources (http://newafricanmagazine.com/ocean-climate-action-making-waves/#sthash.BybFvWx2.dpuf). SDG14 meeting was also attended by Dr Ana Queiros, please see separate entry. COP22 involved high level participants such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission - UNESCO, the UN Environmental Programme, the World Bank, advisors to the UN General Assembly's Secretary-General, the IPCC, several high level envoys from governments around the world, the royal families of Monaco and Morrocco, and donors of marine research funding. Through Ana's presence at COP22, results and activities from the NECR-DEFRA MERP were disseminated at this level, as well as to research, industry, policy and civil society. Ana advertised MERP research in three ways at COP22: a) via media and social media; b) via talks at scheduled side-events; and c) via direct engagement at the PML stand. Media & Social Media: Ana engaged though Twitter about her and PML's activities at COP via her personal account @DrAnaQueiros. Our top media tweet was our advertising of the side event hosted in the UK pavilion (Green is Great), where she presented MERP results, which received a reach of 2,242 impressions. NERC retweeted one of Ana's tweets promoting the presence of the NERC-DEFRA MERP at COP22. Further to this, Ana was interviewed by Laurie Goering, Head of Climate Programme at Thomson Reuters, as part of the group of marine researchers present at the event, resulting in the following article published by Reuters on 25 November 2016: http://news.trust.org/item/20161125090402-u92xa Reuters is frequently used by other media for their stories, and the story was re-published by the Daily Mail, All Africa, Business Times, Inter Press Service News Agency, Jakarta Globe, Humanosphere, Press Reader, Oman Daily Observer, The Guam Daily Post, and potentially others we have not been able to track. The interview was further disseminated by PML on social media. Ana was also interviewed for Moroccan TV Channel 1 in an interview focused on youth at COP22. Presentations: Ana presented MERP research results pertaining to task 2.2 on blue carbon/macrophyte links to ocean carbon sequestration at a side event "Climate readiness -Ocean based adaptation and mitigation" in the GB pavilion (November 10th) with the presentation entitled "Blue Carbon + Climate Ready Conservation = Climate Action", which was followed by a Q&A session which was very well attended. The panellist list at this event included also Dr Carol Turley, Dr Phil Williamson, and Dr Tim Dixon from the International Energy Agency. Some of the blue carbon research advances in MERP was then again presented at the COP22 Ocean Action day side-event for Small Island Developing States, as Ana provided content for Dr Turley's presentation. Ana engaged directly with COP22 delegates about MERP research at other side events which she co-organised with PML colleagues, which included other world class researchers as pannelists, including members of IOC-UNESCO, IUCN, NOAA, and the IPCC. Further to this, Ana engaged directly with delegates at the PML stand, which was placed with the Blue Zone, and with participants in all of the side events co-organised. The stand was an excellent way of engaging delegates from policy, industry, private sector, NGO's and civil society. At the stand, Ana was able to promote research undertaken within MERP, through dissemination of contact card with QR code hyperlink to the programme's webpage and dissemination of USB sticks with the programme summary documents custom written in layman language for this event by Kelvin Boot and K-M Davidson (PML) with the contribution of MERP wide researchers. Direct engagement focused primarily on Blue Carbon work undertaken as part of MERP task 2.2., but also modelling and ecosystems services research undertaken within the wider programme. Following the event, Dr Queiros has made numerous international contacts and continues to promote and communicate the work she is doing through MERP. |
