Lead Research Organisation: Queen Mary University of London
Department Name: English

Abstract

The key research questions are:
How and why was the home an important site of religious practice for Protestant, Catholic and Jewish communities in the period?
What are the connections and differences between the domestic practices of different faith communities? What sources of tension existed?
How did religious communities formally excluded from the public sphere seek to make the boundaries between home and public more porous?
How did the urban environment shape domestic devotion and the intersection of religious life and professional activities?
How were the boundaries between the sacred and the worldly negotiated within the space of the family home?
