The aim of Stephen's PhD project is to understand the large values of the Riemann zeta function and other L-functions. In particular, he will be developing the work done in 2007 by David Farmer, Steve Gonek and Christopher Hughes on the maximum size of the Riemann zeta function up to height T, finding sub-leading terms in the asymptotic expansion. He will also be learning the newer techniques from probability theory on branching random walks in logarithmically correlated fields with an aim to understand better the distribution of the maxima over short intervals.
