Abstract
The project will revolutionize the ability of mm-thick streams of cold water clean, in the way that the award-winning StarStream technology revolutionized cleaning in cm-wide streams of cold water. The ability to turn a simple stream of cold water into an effective remover of the biofilms that resist current dental care practice could be potentially world-changing. Globally, about 30% of people aged 65-74 have no natural teeth, and 15-20% of adults aged 35-44 have severe gum disease (data: World Health Organization). This has severe social implications, and drains healthcare resources from other priorities. The treatment of established dental infections by infections fuels AMR, the rise of 'superbugs'.
