Representations of UK foreign fighters 2012-2017

Lead Research Organisation: London School of Economics and Political Science
Department Name: International Relations

Abstract

In 2017, over 40,000 people worldwide had travelled to Syria and Iraq to join 'violent extremist groups'. Approximately 850 are from the UK, around half of whom have returned. I will explore the challenge that foreign fighters pose to traditional understandings of International Relations. Specifically, I will analyse how representations of foreign fighters in the UK between 2012 and 2017 have produced and resisted some binary epistemological categories, such as the distinction between national and international politics.
