Abstract

How do German Cultural Institutions give access to Cultural Agents from Abroad?
Can the art world work with international artists, without making them a "project of integration" and marking their being different? Which role do strategies in museums and curating play when it comes to the collaboration with artists from other countries and cultures? Those questions are in the focus of my research on visual artists from Turkey who moved to Germany in the last 15 years. It will highlight how policies shape artists' lives and analyze how differing perceptions of German-Turkish artists and communities may lead to new cultural policies. My findings will contribute to important discourses on belonging and integration.

Results and Impact Many know Turkish 'Kahvehanes', or coffee-houses, where Turkish men sip from their coffee or tea, play their favourite game, 'Okey', and talk about everyday topics. This online-'Kahvehane' breaks with preconceptions and is an open space to discuss art and experiences of living or working abroad in the cultural sector. Come with me to (virtually) visit Kübra Zeynep Kübra Sariaslan, who is working as an academic across borders and listen to filmmaker Eren Aksu who is currently based in Berlin.

The event was designed to raise awareness for new artistic by artists who relocated from Turkey to Berlin in the last years amongst a wider public. Approx. 30 people participated in the zoom-workshop and contributed to a lively discussion.
