We Versions: Digital Transpositions of Sonic Corporeal Experiences with Urban Architecture

Lead Research Organisation: Manchester Metropolitan University
Department Name: The Manchester School of Architecture

Abstract

This interdisciplinary practice-based research project will investigate the sonic history of the Coventry inner ring-road (built between 1962-74) and its underpinning network of subterranean passageways. It will cultivate new insights on the formation and behaviour of sonic publics within this increasingly threatened environment, with a focus on the corporeal responses of its constituents, to identify the impact of the construction on those who have encountered this distinct and prominent heterotopic space. Through the employment of sound and critical theory, this project seeks to provoke a transformative experience that attempts to connect existing and future audiences to develop a deeper appreciation and historical understanding of the site
