Patterning Paisley: The role of textile archives in co-design and innovation

Department Name: Research & Enterprise

Abstract

With Paisley Museum as a partner, my research asks whether design-led outreach employing activist models can innovative the ways that textile archives and heritage inspire and sustain new production.
Textile heritage was at the centre of Paisley's City of Culture 2021 bid and it is important that the momentum and grassroots support can be usefully employed in light of the bid's failure. Often regeneration schemes are top-down, but my research asks whether and how design-led responses to the archive might emerge from, and involve community and collaboration.
Paisley has recently digitised a large part of its textile archive, and my research will address how this might be utilised in commercialising and understanding shared resources.
