Abstract

will conduct his research training through the UKRI Centre for Machine Intelligence for Nano-electronic Devices and Systems (MINDS), a four-year integrated PhD programme. His research will explore fundamental methods for machine learning algorithms that are suitable for operating in low-power embedded devices. The commonly employed deep neural-network (DNN) classification algorithms used in a wide variety of applications in image/video processing and data analytics are heavily reliant on high-performance, typically cloud-based computation resources. This severely reduces the utility of using contemporary machine learning methods in large-scale applications of benefit to future industry and society, such as smart cities. The research will address this challenge by evaluating the use of novel DNN approaches on memory and power-constrained devices, and will be conducted in collaboration with an industry partner to be determined.
