Ecological Consciousness in Contemporary Scottish Theatre

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Arts

Abstract

Borrowing from Timothy Morton's theory of 'ecological thought', this project will engage with the idea that all entities are inextricably interconnected; in particular, that humans are part of the ecological fabric of the environments they inhabit. For the first time, I will show the way in which ideas of nationhood impact 'ecological thought', and vice versa, in an exploration of contemporary Scottish theatre. This project will not only reveal the previously unacknowledged ecological emphases of certain Scottish plays but how notions of nationality, ideology and environmentalism may be reimagined together within the theatre, pioneering a new cosmo-local-national ecocriticism.
