Archiving Muriel Spark

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Arts

Abstract

Research question(s)/problem: What new evidence does the NLS archive reveal about Spark's writing and editing practices, her relationship to the publishing industry and the credibility of the critical valuation of her novels over her poetry?

Research context, methods and sources, originality/innovation and contribution to knowledge: Muriel Spark is Scotland's greatest twentieth-century novelist. Currently her literary archive is split between the McFarlin Library at the University of Tulsa and the 300 box files which constitute the National Library of Scotland's Spark archive. The latter is a vast material collection reflecting Muriel Spark's life and writing, including not only important published and still unpublished literary manuscripts, but also letters, clothes, receipts and memorabilia. It will form the primary research resource for this project.
