Abstract

...of science and opera.

This practice research PhD will create new libretti for short operas within multi-media production environments that optimise how an audience appreciates both contemporary opera and complex science. Mainly, it will anthropomorphise difficult notions in physics and animate them using human nature and philosophy.

The constantly innovating field of physics provides an endless resource for artistic inspiration which will always be relevant to the contemporary world. I shall investigate how abstract information can be portrayed in opera (just as mythology has been) through a series of case studies that analyse the process from libretto to production. The project will devise a new model for engaging science with opera (and visa-versa) by generating characters, relationships and scenarios from physics. The paradigm will include how to adapt performances to current opera audiences and use a collaborative methodology to test the application of multiple disciplines. The project will experiment with vocal techniques and production design for presenting different types of information. I shall collaborate with composers and potential write melodies for future arrangement.
