Optical transmitter towards T-bit/s data centre interconnections

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

The rise of cloud computing and other emerging web applications has created the need for more powerful warehouse-scale data centres. These data centres (DCs) comprise of hundreds of thousands of servers that communicate with each other via a high performance and low latency interconnect, which facilitate the highly efficient computing, data storage and access. The next generation data centre interconnection requires high-speed, low-cost, low power consumption, and highly integrated transceivers that meets the latency and transmission distance requirements. This project aims to jointly investigate transmitter hardware, software, and novel optical fibre to unlock the next generation DC interconnection technologies. It is supported by ESPRC project and aligned to EPSRC field optical communications.
