Abstract

This project makes use of notational methods which prompt 'a paradox of consciousness' in which performers must constantly re-adjust their focus, never researching a stable or clear point, operating within what Voeglin terms a metaxy. These include graphic and video scores that are wilfully ambiguous and require a constant alteration of attention to interpret: this might guide specific musical parameters, such as tempi and timbre, or a broader approach to sonic experience . This experience of in-between evoked int eh intrepreter inisistls on the dissolution of form, as stability is rejected. Liminal events transitory swirls of thresholds, are created or highlighted from which stability has the opportunity to arise. There is no 'telos'(Kramer, 1988) but potential directions, structural 'red-herrings', will materialise from iminality-in-itself.
Having developed a framework for using liminality-in-itself, the creation of interactive multimedia works will be used to artistically explore communities who are in states of 'permanent liminality' (Szakolczai, 2014) such as homeless individuals. This collection of works and commentary will be achieved by folowing an interactive research methodology: a work's interaction with liminality-in-itself will highlight new areas of potential exploration which wil inform the following work, and so on. Dialogues with other reserachers will inform my creative work which will uncover futher details about liminality-in-itself. For example, the in-between giving rise to meaningful events will be applicable to social anthropology and artistic practice alike.
