Engaging with contemporary art by providing new ecological imaginaries

Abstract

My award-winning artistic practice engages with the social role of contemporary art by providing new ecological imaginaries. Through this PhD I intend to advance my critical, academic and creative skills to refine this work. By doing so I hope to enable a future career as a creative-academic practitioner capable of using archival and artistic practices to contribute to research, and facilitate public engagement, especially around contemporary environmental problems.

My project understands that these environmental concerns emerge from social and cultural causes; that their impacts aren't restricted to disciplinary-specific fields; and that interdisciplinarity is key to forming new intellectual and creative responses to them. This interdisciplinarity is built into my proposal via engagements with more-than-human-geographies, environmental humanities, and extinction studies. My co-supervisory team provides subject-specific and interdisciplinary expertise to support this, allowing me to undertake innovative research that wouldn't be achievable via standard disciplinary pathways
