Investigating the effect of gamelan participation on wellbeing: testing the impact of form of facilitation and complexity on experience of flow state.

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Music

Abstract

I will address ways in which playing gamelan music can improve wellbeing through flow state. Qualitative research indicates that aspects of wellbeing are correlated with the experience of flow state and are induced by gamelan playing. Quantitative research that experimentally tests those hypothesised effects has however not yet been conducted. Therefore my project will develop a quantitative methodology to capture the effects of flow state and wellbeing in gamelan, then test how these effects are influenced by complexity and different forms of facilitation, before entering a discourse with practitioners and applying my findings.
