A landscape and environmental study of historic charcoal production in West and South Yorkshire

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Archaeology

Abstract

Charcoal production is one of the oldest recorded woodland industries, yet archaeological research into these sites is limited in the UK. This project will investigate the scale, chronology and diversity of charcoal production in West and South Yorkshire in relation to woodland management, ecology and environmental change. By integrating archival research, remote sensing, field walking, geoarchaeology, charcoal analysis, palynology and radiocarbon dating this PhD will contribute to national and international studies of charcoal and woodland industries, and inform policies of woodland management and plantation strategies.
