Performance and moving image from the margins: Renarrating histories of racism in the arts through strategies of creative praxis

Lead Research Organisation: Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
Department Name: Postgraduate School

Abstract

In the context of the responses of UK cultural institutions to the global reckonings on structural oppression in 2020, this research confronts the continuous failure of institutional policy in the arts since 1976 to address inequitable, hostile conditions for artists of colour. Critically examining the historical and ongoing strategies of artists of colour who have sustained their practices and resisted co-option, despite these conditions, this practice-based research will develop new curatorial and facilitation strategies to renarrate histories of racism in the arts.
