Women's lived experiences of entrepreneurship in Uganda: navigating livelihoods, solidarities and settlement spaces

Lead Research Organisation: Northumbria University
Department Name: Fac of Arts, Design and Social Sciences

Abstract

This research seeks to critically explore the ways in which entrepreneurial activities enable women refugees to create livelihoods opportunities, focusing on three key inter-related themes - biographies, solidarities and settlement spaces. Taking the emphasis away from current policy and programming which has a narrow focus on how entrepreneurship leads to local economic contributions, the broader everyday experiences and interactions of women refugees will be investigated using visual and participatory methods. The research will take place in the Nakivale settlement in Uganda which has a diverse, multi-nationality population of over 135,000 refugees, where entrepreneurial activities are encouraged and supported by civic organisations.
