'Death in Motion': The Un/Grievability of Death in Contemporary Fantastic Film and Television

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: English

Abstract

My research focuses on representations of death in contemporary fantastic film and television, including texts from the fantasy, science fiction and horror genres. Using a combination of theoretical perspectives, close readings and cultural analysis, I will look in particular at the deaths of minor characters which are not grieved or recognised as losses, exploring how this affects our understanding of the value of their lives. I will also investigate how the construction of the protagonists as characters relies on the unmarked deaths of those around them, and explore the social and cultural implications of this narrative hierarchy.
