Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Sociology

Abstract

This research concerns representations of "explicit" asexualities within mainstream post-apocalyptic video games, centring on dystopian landscapes and ruin. This project will analyse how games and their players construct discourses of asexualities, further considering the significance of asexualities within popular culture. Research questions: RQ1: How are representations of asexualities discursively constructed within mainstream post-apocalyptic video games through game design? RQ2: How do players engage with such asexual discourses?RQ3:How do post-apocalyptic settings create distinct discourses around sex, sexuality, and desirable and desiring bodies?RQ4: How can this case study contribute towards wider developing debates about asexualities?
