'Rewilding' Fionn Mac Cumhaill? The cultural ecology of Gaelic heroic narrative in the landscape of the Gàidhealtachd.

Lead Research Organisation: University of the Highlands and Islands
Department Name: Sabhal Mor Ostaig UHI

Abstract

The project will research the changing representations of specific archaeological and geological sites since the Middle Ages, through the antiquarian era, and into the present, in written, oral, and orally-derived narrative and onomastic tradition. It will explore the complex processes by which heroic literary legacies have been and continue to be re-interpreted within the cultural ecology of the Gàidhealtachd, and will test and analyse their potential role in developing public engagement with wilderness and the heritage of place.
