Where are the Women of Colour? Addressing Gaps and Silences in Science and Industry Museum Collections

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Sch of Philosophy

Abstract

The PGR will work closely with different collections and across teams, to uncover an untold or lesser-known history, and ensure that these stories are preserved for future generations. The method of oral histories is particularly interesting for its potential to provide a rich and nuanced insight into a historical landscape. The educational impact that this could have on the general public but especially those of school/college-age is another motivating factor. The PGR will draw upon SIM's extensive learning and engagement network in order to create a lasting legacy of resources, which could supplement the school curriculum. From a museological perspective, the PGR aims to analyse the policies and practice which resulted in the current gaps and silences, and then understand how current procedures may be improved or changed for the future.
