Decolonising the Dataset: Data Visualisation for Tibetan Ways of Knowing and Using National Museums Liverpool's Collections

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Arts Languages and Cultures

Abstract

This project, a collaboration between the National Museums Liverpool (NML) and the University of Manchester (UoM), will generate new understandings, visualisations, and uses for the Tibet collection data at NML. Its two interconnected and innovative aims are: 1) to examine and recognise museum collection databases as sites of colonial exploitation and extraction; 2) to use decolonising methods to build collection data visualisation tools that allow Tibetan users to transform and repurpose data to serve their epistemological and ontological needs.
