Abstract
Using the Galician muiñeiras of violinist-composers Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), Andres Gaos (1874-1959) and Manuel Quiroga (1892-1961) as case studies, this practice-led PhD will offer an extensive investigation of this repertoire alongside orally transmitted equivalents re-evaluating the links between Western classical music and folk music traditions in Spain, filling a gap in scholarly literature. An ethnographic study will be complemented by archival research and artistic collaborations with active Galician practitioners through which the connections between these two genres of music will be explored. Through bimusicality, drawing on the styles of Galician copleros and Historically Informed Performance (HIP) as a model from which to develop performative approaches, this study will examine the origins, structures, and functions of the muiñeira in Galicia and the implications any changes have on its development and its perception in today's society, as well as widening its potential audience.
