Future-proofing a Heritage Asset: A Case Study using the Tyne Theatre & Opera House

Lead Research Organisation: Northumbria University
Department Name: Fac of Engineering and Environment

Abstract

Research into how heritage assets can be future-proofed is critical, as the historic fabric of cities across the UK faces erosion. This proposal focuses on how a significant, Grade 1 listed theatre in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne can be adapted for the 21st Century, physically and programmatically, to appeal to a modern audience. The Tyne Theatre requires innovation and investment in order to be revitalised and secured. The PhD will develop, record and reflect on the participatory design process to ensure transferability and maximise impact. Qualitative research and community participatory design will help to inform both a business case for the theatre and an academic research framework to analyse how other culturally significant heritage buildings can be safe-guarded for the future.
