Images, Objects, and Spaces: Representations of the Ottoman Turk in Early Modern England

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: History

Abstract

My project will explore the influence of Ottoman visual and material culture on the discourses and everyday practices of English men and women. Using interdisciplinary approaches to promote a holistic perspective, it seeks to examine the contrasting and evolving representations of Ottoman Turks in early modern England between 1650 and 1750. It aims to challenge the predominant narrative of 'otherness' in the current narrow scholarship, and situate the issue within contemporary questions of the transfer of knowledge and consumption of goods.
