This chapter reviews the worldwide occurrences of the greatest known perturbation to the global carbon cycle in Earth's history. The potential of the FAR- DEEP drillcore to further this knowledge is outlined, in the context of the Archive data produced through this NERC Grant. The current best estimates for the timing and duration of the event are specified using new dating produced through this NERC Grant.
