This chapter provides a critical evaluation of the way in which the theory of shifting hegemonic masculinities has been formulated and interpreted. We argue that R. W. Connell and other scholars working with this theory have conflated transient and changeable social stereotypes with aspects of the deep seated and enduring forms of hegemony, which may be better understood through Bourdieuƕs idea of habitus.
