This article explores the physicochemical basis of the relationship between the microbial cell (especially its macromolecular systems), water, and polymeric and aromatic substances - including hydrocarbons - in the microbial habitat. It demonstrates that water can act as a chaperone for macromolecular systems, that the cytosol-membrane-extracellular milieu form an energetic and material continuum, and discuses the concept of symmetric versus asymmetric stresses.
