This chapter shows that, even after the development of his mature theory, Schenker thought of performance in terms of the 'old style' or rhetorical performance that was already in decline between the wars: in this way there was a disjunction between his theory and his idea of how musical should go in performance. This matters, because present-day theoretical orthodoxy as represented by Schenkerian performance pedagogy is built on the mapping of structure to performance.
