Abstract
Cell mechanics is determined by the cytoskeleton. We will develop models of the actin cytoskeleton using analytical theory and computational simulations including both active contractility and actin polymerisation. Most existing models consider only one of these out-of-equilibrium force generation mechanisms but including both is necessary to decipher their relative roles. These models will enable us to analyse experimental data on mechanics (AFM) and dynamics (fluorescence techniques FRAP and TIRF). Most literature studies use models with assumptions that are known to be wrong for biological cells so more appropriate models are needed. We will collaborate with experimentalists in Sheffield and Saarbrucken.
