Impact | Walking Works Wonders has now been funded by Loughborough University's Enterprise Projects group as a standalone service |
Description | Working Late has raised public awareness of the ageing workforce, the facilitators and barriers to later life working and the benefits of multigenerational working. The research has also highlighted that age discrimination is still evident in recruitment, despite age discrimination legislation. Some of the personal accounts from the interviews have been presented as case study videos along with expert responses: http://www.workinglate.org/research/later-life-working/ Working Late has developed new interventions, resources and design solutions to facilitate later life working. The Journey to Work resource (available as a booklet or on-line facility from the Working Late website), helps workers to explore different methods of travelling and facilitates discussion among employees and employers. The Walking Works Wonders intervention was shown to improve employee health, well-being and quality of working life and improve organisational outcomes such as sickness absence and productivity. The OWL resource has 2 themes 'The body at work' (a suite of image and word cards that consider the body, equipment and actions when working) and 'Healthy ageing though design' (personal stories and design issues in relation to health and age at work). |
Exploitation Route | The Walking Works Wonders intervention is now a commercial service to industry: http://www.walkingworkswonders.com The Journey to Work resource is available for use in organisations. The on-line OWL facility and image cards can be used to facilitate discussion of health needs with workers. The team have also developed a set of wearable devices to simulate age-related occupational ill-health conditions called SKInS (Sensory and Kinaesthetic Interactive Simulation) which simulate dermatitis, vibration white finger, musculo-skeletal disorders, respiratory disorders and tinnitus. They give younger workers insight into how these conditions would look and feel if they contracted them. The National Construction College use SKInS in their apprentice training and both Rolls Royce and Skanska (global construction company) have also expressed interest. |

PI Contribution | The Working Late team developed an intervention to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour in workers of all ages. We partnered with the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) and launched a national competition for designers to develop innovative ways of encouraging people to be more active at work. The winning entry was the Walking Lunch, which comprises a large map (1 metre diameter) which is placed in a communal area of a worksite. The map represents a radius of 1.5 km and displays the surrounding areas of the worksite. The aim is to encourage employees to use their lunchtime breaks for a local walk. When employees arrive at an area on the map, they might take a photo on their mobile phone or digital camera, and come back to the office to print out the photo and pin it to the map using tags. The tags have space for employees to record the number of steps taken to get to the location in the image and any other relevant information. This interactive map encourages other employees to visit these areas. Employees participating in the intervention were provided with pedometers and an individual (smaller) paper version of the map to track their journeys and make any notes. The Walking Lunch was trialled in 10 worksites across the UK and was very well received by participating organisations and employees. The intervention improved productivity and quality of working life and reduced sickness absence, providing economic benefits to organisations. There is now considerable scope for the Walking Lunch to be developed into a widely available product that could benefit many organisations in the private and public sector.
