SPACE: Supportive environments for Physical and social Activity, healthy ageing and CognitivE health

Abstract
The number of people worldwide living with dementia and cognitive impairment is increasing, mainly due to people living longer, so we want to figure out how where we live affects dementia and brain health as we get older. Some research suggests that where we live might influence our brain health. For example, poor air quality in towns and cities, can lead to a decline in brain health. As more of us now live in towns and cities, it is important that the environment where we live is scientifically designed and improved to maximise our brain health.
The complex social and physical environments where we live make some people more vulnerable than others to developing cognitive impairment. In other words, the factors that account for who is most likely to develop cognitive ill-health due to the environment has less to do with 'how' we live and more to do with 'where' we live. We do not know how these factors interact to make urban environments a problem for brain health, nor which are the best policies and interventions for promoting healthy ageing and brain health for our poorest communities.
Our project will provide evidence for policies and practices that provide supportive urban environments to promote healthy ageing, including promoting brain health. This could include using creative urban designs to support people to adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles such as being more active. However, this needs a strong evidence base with expert community advocates who can articulate how supportive urban environments can improve brain health.
Our research has the following steps:
1. First, with the help of stakeholders, including those from business, industry, and local government, and a review of existing research, we will represent the relationships between our biology, our lifestyles and our environment in a diagram illustrating how they likely interact to affect brain health, because visual thinking can help stakeholders better identify possible intervention sweet-spots to improve brain health.
2. By analysing data from over 8,000 older people in Northern Ireland, and linking this to information about where they live, such as the amount of air pollution, the toxins in soil, or how walkable their neighbourhoods are, we will explore how different environmental factors relate to brain health.
3. Next, we will collect new data on a subgroup of 1,000 older people including more in-depth measures of brain health and better measures of physical activity, using GPS devices worn around the waist that monitor our locations. This will allow us to explore how the urban environment influences our brain health.
4. Then, we will explore how aspects of our biology play a role in how the urban environment affects our brain health.
5. We will host workshops with local citizens to 'sense-check' our findings and co-develop promising prevention approaches. In these, we will explore the acceptability, affordability, feasibility and sustainability of new initiatives to improve the environmental influences on brain health. This might include, for example, policies on: expanding the car-free areas of the city to reduce air pollution; increasing the number of footpaths and cycle paths to encourage walking and cycling; improving public transport to reduce car use.
As a result of our research we will produce:
1. A map of the system in which our genes, lifestyle behaviours and urban environments interact to affect brain health, to help guide stakeholders towards policies and programmes that can improve brain health.

| Impact | Numerous postgraduates involved in Make Belfast Playful said they appreciated the need of discussing the health impacts of environmental health and nature-based solutions from hearing about the SPACE projects and reading numerous of our output documents. Questions and activities incorporating the impact of the environment and health were included in the public consultation. Outputs from the public consultation included resident's expressing how they feel being within urban green and blue spaces and how they may benefit their health and so should be included in the project design for regenerating the site of interest around their homes. The first session covered the basics of causality, key concepts of DAGs, and practical exercises aiming to equip participants with foundational knowledge and skills. The second session focused on applying this knowledge through discussion and analysis of participant-submitted DAGs, enhancing understanding and peer learning. | Results and Impact | Helen McLaughlin (AgeNI) was invited to speak on the panel by NI Director of Community Transport Frances Campbell. The panel was AgeNI, Kate Clifford MBE, CEO of Rural Community Network, 2 Community Transport users, and 2 Community Transport managers, Head of Services Disability Action and Chair of the Voluntary Sector Panel of the Joint Forum. They asked about what the findings were in relation to transport and travel, and what the priorities are for future planning. Community Transport Association which is the UK-wide Community Transport charity - were launching their research called "Mapping the Sector" which is a root and branch look at Community Transport, provision, usage, fleet and funding in NI specifically. Raised awareness of the collaboration between QUB SPACE and Age NI and The Paul Hogarth Company. Listening in were Deborah Erskine, Chair of the Stormont Infrastructure Committee, and Kellie Armstrong MLA and a few other MLAs in and out a well. Also Deputy Secretary for Climate, Planning and Public Transport Judith Andrews and Victoria Armstrong, UK CEO of CTA. We stressed the point about the importance of aligning the solutions with cross-departmental planning. |

| Results and Impact | On Thursday 7th November, SPACE ran an event as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science. Based on feedback from our Healthy Ageing Advisory Group, we hosted the event in a rural setting, as opposed to Belfast. This was particularly important given that the focus of the event was dissemination of findings from a piece of research conducted with Age NI and The Paul Hogarth Company, entitled "Healthy Ageing in Rural and Coastal Areas of Northern Ireland: Challenges and Solutions". Niamh O'Kane, Helen McLaughlin (Age NI) and James Hennessey (The Paul Hogarth Company) presented an overview of SPACE and of the findings from the report. We then engaged in discussion with the participants, asking them for feedback on the findings, and suggestions for where we should take this work next (both in terms of further dissemination, and also further research). It was a really engaging session with members of the public who themselves were older adults, and also individuals working in the space across NI in the age sector network. |

| Results and Impact | Earth Day 2024 - invited by the NI Science Festival to bring activities to the Ulster Museum in Belfast as part of their Earth Day celebrations. We had the foyer of the museum for interactive family activities, and a separate room for a reading circle, approx four times per hour, of our No Planet B children's storybook. We also had a workstation set-up allowing members of the public to try out the SPACE Geo-Portal. In addition, poster boards displaying the SPACE fact-sheets, mounted on wooden stakes, were allowed by Belfast City Council to be erected on the green in front of the museum, within the grounds of Botanic Gardens (in which the Museum is located) for two weeks, thus offering an opportunity to view by the general public walking through the park. |

| Results and Impact | As part of the SPACE research project, in collaboration with OSNI/Land and Property Services, we have been developing a platform for accessing geospatial data across Northern Ireland - the SPACE geoportal. The geoportal can be used for exploring and downloading Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data relating to environmental variables which influence health and healthy ageing in our environment. Our open access geoportal resource houses 80+ datasets from across Northern Ireland, including land cover, climate, health, infrastructure and many more. The geoportal will be a useful resource for those working across research, academia, and policy in the area of health and the environment, and can be used to explore, discover, download and visualise spatial data across Northern Ireland. On 26th October 2023, we officially launched the geoportal at an in-person event at Queen's University Belfast. Over 70 individuals attended and heard speakers (including Ruth Hunter, Shay Mullineaux, Jennifer McKinley, Gemma McNickle and chair Niamh O'Kane) introduce the context around the development of the geoportal, introduce the geoportal itself, and discuss how the geoportal can be applied across research and teaching, practice, and policy. Those attending the event were then able to explore the geoportal themselves, with computers at each table. There was a member of the SPACE/geoportal team on hand to guide use of the tool and answer any questions. There was a Q&A session and some very engaging discussions. Individuals from Public Health Agency, landscape architect firms, and trusts expressed interest in using the tool and have suggested that the team could come and present the resource at various meetings. There were ideas from participants on how we could expand on the resource and encourage organisations to use it. Members of our Healthy Ageing Advisory Group were also in attendance and got to explore the geoportal in person. |

In our April meeting, there were updates from all stakeholders from previous meeting and a presentation on urban farming/agriculture from Patricia Wallace (Social Farms and Gardens). Prof Ruth Hunter and Dr Christopher Tate then presented a session entitled "GroundsWell Consortium Evidence and Training". There was then a discussion on the Greening the City Mapping Topic Paper. Visitors heard insights from local and regional kidney disease charities (Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund, Kidney Care UK, Northern Ireland Kidney Patients Association), showcasing the incredible work they do to transform the lives of patients and their families. Attendees stepped into our mini-lab, building their own candy DNA and learning about kidney filtration using household items, alongside QUB scientists from the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health group. Visitors discovered how this ground-breaking research is revolutionizing therapies and interventions for kidney disease. A special musical performance from the QUB Renal Arts Group band, Ragbone build a blend of art, science, music, fun and community, leaving visitors inspired and informed. |

The committee's membership represents academia, industry, media, and other interest groups. The primary functions of the committee are to address issues of national and international interest through a programme of work, advise the Academy on the formation of policy and act as the national adhering organisation for international unions including the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The committee has a varied programme of works ranging from lectures, expert statements on issues of national and international importance, and special events focusing on topical issues. | Results and Impact | The SPACE Team took their 'No Planet B' event to five locations in Northern Ireland over five days, including Belfast, County Londonderry and County Tyrone in response to public opinion on accessing events outside of Belfast. The theme of the event was to 'Explore urban environments' impact on health, climate change effects, and the importance of protecting Earth, our fifth largest planet'. The event included dome shows in the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium's portable dome, including the new No Planet B animated story book and educational films on health and space, delivered by one of the planetariums astronomers. There was fun family engagement including making your own DNA. Attendees received a free copy of the No Planet B comic and children's storybook, as well as the educational workbook, launched at the roadshow. Attendees were also directed to the SPACE website to access further resources and download free versions of those provided on the day. |

| Results and Impact | In September 2023, in collaboration with involve NI, we ran three consecutive workshops entitled "Leadership for healthy people and planet: an invitation to accelerate integrated policy and action on health and environment". It is important that the environment we live in is designed and improved to maximise brain health, and prevention receives very little policy attention. This co-design process aimed to bring together a wide range of stakeholders to set a policy agenda and pathways to improve the environments where we live with a focus on prevention, healthy ageing and brain health. Working with involve NI (Rebekah McCabe and Michael Donnelly), we designed three workshops taking place on consecutive weeks in September. We gathered together policy makers, implementers, researchers, advocates, campaigners and the general public to engage in the process - with 54 participants representing 30 individual organisations represented. Participants heard from experts, made connections, discovered policy agendas and agreed actions. Six topics emerged from the workshops to reflect the insights and aspirations of those participating: knowledge sharing, collaboration, leadership for change, car dependency, how we design and live in communities, and sustainability. The majority (93%) of participants reported meeting or networking with individuals they had previously not. Most (73%) reported they were happy with the outcome of the workshops and that they learned more about current research; 63% said they plan to reach out to groups to discuss policy action. The findings from the workshops were summarised in a report available online [https://www.qub.ac.uk/sites/space/Resources/#space-policy-workshop-report-2048885-4]. One common goal from the participants in the workshops was to continue these conversations, potentially as a working group who continues to meet going forward and works together to formulate a pathway to policy. The next steps of this piece of work are to: circulate and disseminate the report (via mailing lists, printing and socials), organise an online webinar to publicly present the findings of the report (and seek feedback from the public and stakeholders), and to organise subsequent meetings with the individuals from the workshops in the format of a working group. We also plan to embed these findings with local government - the project was approached by a colleague in the Department of Health NI who is enthusiastic about embedding a SPACE researcher in their Making Life Better team, those working on the public health strategic framework for Northern Ireland. In this way, we will endeavour to ensure that the findings and further findings of the working group will have impact on local and regional policy. |

Participants brought along personal objects and shared their story with the audience which included researchers and representatives from our Older Persons Reference Group, engaged in group discussion about the past, present and hopes for the future as we age and built time capsules which will be buried at future events connected to the project. A time capsule was given to our youngest participant to take into School to talk about his day and build a capsule with his classmates, and a second was posted to a family who were keen to learn more about the project but were unable to attend on the day - they plan to build their own capsule. |

Individuals from research, policy and practice, as well as members of our Healthy Ageing Advisory Group, came together to hear from international keynote speakers, SPACE research staff and some of our practitioner partners. Speakers included: George MacGinnis, Healthy Ageing Challenge Ruth Hunter, Queen's University Belfast Sara Adar, University of Michigan Jennifer McKinley, Queen's University Belfast Helen McLaughlin and George (a member of our Healthy Ageing Advisory Group), Age NI James Hennessey, The Paul Hogarth Company Katie Stringer, Studio Idir Eileen Crimmins and Jennifer Ailshire, University of Southern California Amy Jayne McKnight, Queen's University Belfast Rebekah McCabe, involve Jinkook Lee, University of Southern California Bernadette McGuinness, Queen's University Belfast Kyleigh Lough, Mae Murray Foundation We heard about the global context and local perspective of healthy ageing, the impact of the environment on ageing, and epigenetics, among other outputs. We also heard from two expert panels on policy and practice, and research legacy. After the formal presentations, delegates were invited for a dome presentation in the planetarium. Here, we launched two new videos: i) no planet B, and ii) ageing in space. You can watch both of these videos . We also launched two exciting new resources: a children's book "no planet B?", and a comic book for teens, "planet B?". These resources explore the topics of the search for a planet B, climate change, and protecting our planet for human health. We launched two reports at our event: 1) our policy workshop report which summarises findings from workshops held with stakeholders on the topic of accelerating policy and action on health and the environment, and 2) our knowledge exchange report which summarises the knowledge exchange approaches taken by researchers and how stakeholders access and want to receive this information. Our early career researchers on the SPACE project had the opportunity to share some of their work via e-posters which were displayed around the planetarium. We are also in the process of finalising a podcast on the future of ageing research as part of the SPACE research. This will include 3 episodes focused on the environment, epigenetics and future research challenges and opportunities, which includes input from our local and international speakers above. |

| Results and Impact | As part of the SPACE ( Supportive Environments for Physical and Social Activity, Healthy Ageing and Cognitive Health) research project, QUB hosted a series of policy workshops on Leadership for Healthy People and Planet. Our aim was to help shape future policy in Northern Ireland on the Environment and Health and agree an ambitious agenda for integrating policy and action on linking environment and health. We wanted to continue these conversations and better understand how we can accelerate integrated policy and action on health and environment. We therefore invited our mailing list, stakeholders and partners to an online webinar hosted by the SPACE team. In a Zoom webinar on Wednesday 29th May, Niamh O'Kane presented an overview of our report. We then heard from cross-disciplinary speakers, who reflected on the findings and provided their insight into where we need to go next. Speakers included: Anne McCusker, Belfast Healthy Cities Callie Persic, Belfast City Council Jacqueline O'Hagan, EastSide Greenways James Hennessey, The Paul Hogarth Company Mura Quigley, Belfast City Council We then had a Q&A with our speakers. Our panel discussed their take on the findings, what we need to do next, and how we should continue to progress this work. |

| Results and Impact | On Thursday 27th February, SPACE ran a webinar entitled Planning for Healthy Ageing in Rural and Coastal Areas. As part of the SPACE project, Queen's University Belfast worked in partnership with Age NI and The Paul Hogarth Company to better understand the challenges and solutions to healthy ageing in rural and coastal environments. Our findings are presented in a report, entitled "Healthy Ageing in Rural and Coastal Areas of Northern Ireland: Challenges and Solutions", in which we summarise findings and suggest solutions and recommendations for moving forward to address some of the challenges and barriers to ageing healthily in rural and coastal areas. The webinar included three speakers: Prof Ruth Hunter, Dr Helen McLaughlin (Age NI) and Dr James Hennessey (The Paul Hogarth Company) who summarised the SPACE project, and more specifically the findings from our report. We had 89 registered for the event which took place on Zoom. After presentations, we led a short breakout room activity where we heard from attendees on what they thought were the key takeaways from the report and what they thought the next steps should be for this work. |
