Abstract
Current methods for video data compression and transmission were designed without anticipating the wide variety of displays and viewing conditions available to today’s user. Apical has developed an advanced video processing technology which simultaneously optimizes the video transmission and enables real-time adaptation to display type and environment. The result is a much higher-quality experience with reduced power consumption. In the Allcast project, Apical and Loughborough University collaborated to test the implementation of this technology in industry standard transmission systems and conducted a detailed analysis of the potential benefits, as well as the limitations, of its use in both the conventional and IP-based broadcast industries. Key outcomes of the project was a successful demonstrator, a convincing body of benchmark measurements, and an agreement with a major broadcaster to start work on a prototype system for commercial deployment.
