Games and Interactive Television

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Computer Science

Abstract

In recent years the boundaries of established screen-based media genres, such as games and television, have become blurred. Also, TV consumption is declining, whereas games and social media consumption is growing. This research will investigate how games and interactive media experiences could be deployed within an 'Interactive TV Framework' to enhance multi-screen TV-centric interaction experiences. The investigation will be prototype-based, undertaking a number of iterations through: analysis of consumer needs, creation of interaction concepts addressing these needs, development of prototypes for experimental enquiry, and experimental evaluation. BTTV will be used as a main case study. The experiments will assess aspects such as engagement, affect, failure, loyalty and will employ qualitative (e.g. interviews) and quantitative (e.g. galvanic skin response) methods.

Results and Impact I visited BT in Adastral Park for 3 days. I met the team members and each of them gave me an hour one-to-one talk. They were very generous to introduce me the highlighted projects they have done before and what they are working on now. I attended a whole day meeting about a project called 2-Immerse. People from different departments in BT tried to work out a future plan for this early staged project. Although it was a short time, both me and the team found it was a very meaningful visit. Especially for me, I got the chance to see the industrial concern and the ways they manage things to truly make contributions to the industry. Now I understand why IGGI is encouraging us to do the placements with companies. In my case, I am absolutely lucky to already have an excellent connection (people are all very nice to me), I sincerely wish I could do good research and pay it back.

Results and Impact I reported the latest journey of my PhD study to the research group of BT that I work with. The presentation included my research interest, research questions, and the progress. The audience showed a great interest in the topic, especially about how the game was made. I demonstrated the game and received positive and helpful feedback.

Results and Impact I gave a presentation about my previous projects and my research topic on loneliness. With advert in advance, a few people from other departments came and we had a good discussion. I am glad to know that there is a team in BT working on loneliness of old people. They are happy to share their findings with me and wish we could have good communication in the future.

Results and Impact Postgraduates sponsored by BT and people from related companies attended this event at the BT headquarter. The topics were rich. Although some of them were not necessarily linked with my research, it is good to have a whole picture of the industry, knowing what the challenges and opportunities are. Now when I hear some terms, I won't feel unfamiliar and probably know what their situations are. The agendas were mostly well-organised. Especially when I got the chance to sit down around a table with other attendees, I fond it was inspiring to brainstorm with them and see their insights over different things. I felt the connections were strengthened when I saw those who came for the first conference appear for the second one as well. It is a brilliant idea to get all funded students together and help us to know what other students are working on!

Results and Impact Companies across the industry and researchers from different universities attended this event at the BT headquarter, Adstral Park. Talks were given on four topics: Storytelling, Delivery, Production, and Consumption. Contents were around the history, current situation and the future of some popular concepts including Esport, VR, broadcasting, streaming, and BT Sport. I found most of them very interesting and useful. It not only extended my view but also provided me with some precious insider information.
