Simulating the births of supermassive black holes
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Portsmouth
Department Name: Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation
Abstract
This project is to develop supercomputer simulations of the births of the first quasars in the universe via the formation of direct collapse black holes in hot, dead entropic protogalaxies at redshifts z ~ 15 - 20.
These models will produce realistic estimates of early x-ray and NIR fluxes to determine if quasar birth will be visible to JWST, Euclid and the coming generation of ground-based ELTs. The project will also study
the growth rates of these nascent black holes to determine if they can accrete at the Eddington limit, as they must to become supermassive by z ~ 6 - 7.

Results and Impact | Helped with the set-up and running of an event aimed at introducing cosmology to families, especially focusing on young children. There was a selection of interactive activities which we helped explain and guided people through. |
