Binding of Oils to Mineral Surfaces

Abstract
The current understanding of the mechanism of the how oil binds to rock such as in enhanced oil recovery hinges on the charged nature of mineral surfaces, particularly clays. Importantly many experimental methods to investigate these surfaces cannot be used with small mineral samples typically available. This project aims to prepare large area substrates with the key surface charge chemistry which should open up these systems to a battery of experimental methods such as SFG and neutron reflection.

Description | The way in which we understand how surfactants in solution can interact with organic species adsorbed at mineral interfaces has been progressed with the data collected in this work. Potential for new fitting and analysis of neutron reflectivity data in collaboration with simulations has been explored. |
Exploitation Route | The new effects seen on a molecular level may be built on, and further experiments undertaken to understand the physical processes at play and determining behaviour. |
