Abstract

The principal aim of this research is to study scientific knowledge and theoretical perception in developing the integrated approach for design, precision manufacturing and metrology of vari-focal lenses and its application perspectives. Overall, this research represents a comprehensive understanding of industrial scale freeform optics manufacturing while further combining functional surface features such as surface anti-dust/self-cleaning and anti-mist/icing aspects. The distinctive objectives of the research include
Critical review of the past and present endeavour and attempts in this research field, and summarizing the state-of-the-art and identifying the knowledge gaps in developing vari-focal lenses products.
Establishing point-to-point mapping and design strategy for vari-focal lenses by taking additional account of the anti-dust/self-cleaning and anti-mist/icing features on the optic surfaces.
Investigation of ultraprecision diamond turning processes those enable to generate precision freeform optical features, and developing the associated CAD/CAM and CNC tool paths algorithms for high precision integrated design and CNC machining.
Design of the associated metrology measurement system for assessing the machining accuracy of vari-focal lenses and their optical performances, which is an essential part of the integrated design-manufacturing-measurement approach.
Further investigation of the integrated approach particularly on its implementation and application perspectives against the requirements for industrial scale ultraprecision production and additional bespoke requirements such as the surface anti-dust/self-cleaning and anti-mist/icing features, etc.
