Entanglement and the emergence of spacetime

Abstract
A longstanding problem in holography is to understand the emergence of the higher-dimensional spacetime from the dual field theory. One of the most important insights comes from the Ryu-Takayanagi relation between the entanglement entropy of the reduced density matrix for a spatial region and the area of a minimal surface in the bulk. This has recently been extended to show that at first subleading order in bulk quantum corrections, the boundary entanglement entropy includes the entanglement entropy of bulk fields in the region between the minimal surface and the boundary, showing that this region is described by the boundary reduced density matrix. The project will further investigate these quantum corrections for different field theory states, aiming to build up a quantum notion of area in the bulk.
