Abstract
The aim of this PhD project is to investigate how root anatomy influences nutrient uptake. This will involve characterising the anatomy of oilseed rape lines under various nutrient conditions using advanced image analysis techniques to identify anatomical scale differences. The root anatomy and ionomic data with be compared to identify root traits that are associated with the uptake of phosphorous.

Results and Impact | The activity was a series of live chats with schools featuring 6 scientists who's work related to the area of "Sustainability". Each scientist filled in a profile talking about our research and a little bit about ourselves as people and then signed up for live chats with schools. The pupils were able to ask the scientists any questions they liked, ranging from specific questions about our research and more general questions about science to questions about our lives and interests. The students then had the opportunity to vote for their favourite scientist and at the end of the 2 week period the scientist with the most votes was awarded £500 to use for future outreach which I won. The students were really engaged in the live chats, it was actually hard to keep up with all the questions we were asked. We also had several comment that they had learnt a lot more about what it is like to be a scientist and even several who said that they would now consider a career in science. Also had some girls comment that it was good to know girls could be scientists too. I also found that some of the questions I was asked made me think differently about my research and it helped me come up with some new ideas which I didn't expect but was very welcome. I have also joined the "I'm a scientist" careers section so that I can answer questions about my career path in science. |
