Abstract
Open quantum systems are quantum systems which are in contact with an environment, and where the influence of the environment is typically described using a master equation like the Lindblad equation. Semiclassical analysis has been a very successful tool in studying many applications of quantum mechanics, but it has not yet been widely used in the study of open quantum systems, and the Phd project of Daniel Speed will focus on that area. In particular he will investigate the relations between semiclassical hypoellipticity, Hormander vector fields and decoherence, with the goal of developing the foundations for a general quantitative and qualitative theory of decoherence for continuous variable quantum systems.

Description | A solution has been found which describes the evolution of a open quantum system for a new set of dynamics. From this, several different elements of open quantum systems can be described, such as the measure of a quantum system's ability to turn classical over time. This quantity has been approximated for a range of parameters. A method for approximating a solution for a new set of dynamics is found. This formulation has the advantage of making calculations used in quantum information theory and quantum computing easier than currently known methods. |
Exploitation Route | The work is directly applicable to the quantum information community and aims to address some key technical problems in the area. |
