Deprivation, Exclusion and Public Engagement on the South Coast of England
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Southampton
Department Name: School of Social Sciences
Abstract
Deprivation has long been a serious issue in the UK, with extremes of deprivation particularly apparent on the South Coast, where pockets of deprivation exist amongst areas of great affluence. In recent years, Southampton has seen some of the highest increases in relative deprivation in England. The proposed mixed methods approach strikes an ideal balance between a less subjective, quantitative approach and rich qualitative data. I am excited to develop my earlier method by using focus groups to discover how the individuals concerned understand a possible relationship between deprivation and public engagement.
