Abstract
Farhad Allian will investigate waves and oscillations in the solar corona using SDO data. He will develop Python codes for these investigations. He will also develop mathematical (analytical and numerical) models for MHD waves using the framework of Magnetohydrodynamics.

Title | A New Method for Detecting Periodicities in Solar Observations |
Description | During my PhD, I have been developing a method to efficiently and robustly detect oscillations within coronal loops observed on the Sun's atmosphere. Our method has important consequences in confidently detecting oscillations which have a poor image contrast with the background based on spatio-temporal autocorrelations. This method provided, for the first time, insight into the spatiotemporal coherence of the observed wavefield highlighting the driving mechanism behind these oscillations. Additionally, our method also has the salutary capability of being utilised in machine learning algorithms searching for oscillations in vast solar datasets. |

Results and Impact | I've participated in several public outreach events, such as the local PubhD (2018) and the internationally renowned Pint of Science festival (2018 & 2019). Around 40 people attended both festivals. My talks sparked several questions relating to general solar research. My second Pint of Science contribution was a Virtual Reality co-demonstration which allowed the audience to 'walk' on the Sun. |
