Abstract
The primary aim of this project is to develop an understanding of how and why the fifteenth century Venetian artist Carlo Crivelli made use of three-dimensionality, both materially and representationally, in his work. By combining an in-depth study of his pain tings, particularly the superlative collection housed in the National Gallery alongside textual evidence, this PhD will allow for a broader understanding of the pictorial and sculptural techniques used by Crivelli and his contemporaries as well as the novel ways in which they respond to the religious needs of their patrons.
