Enhancement of the UK Primary Standard for Absorbed Dose for Proton Radiotherapy

Abstract
The proposal is to combine the NPL Graphite Calorimeter, which defines the UK standard for absorbed dose in proton radiotherapy but has no position sensitivity, with radiation-hard position sensing tracking detectors from particle physics. These will accurately map the profile of the dose distribution on the front of the NPL calorimeter to provide a new instrument which, for spot scanning proton radiotherapy, provides both the delivered dose and the dose beam-spot profile and monitors this as a function of time.
