Quantum effects in non-minimally coupled and non-renormalizable field theories

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Currently the inflationary models with non-minimal coupling provide an exciting area of research. In particular, the Higgs boson of the Standard Model can lead to inflation, if non-minimally coupled to gravity. Moreover, presence of non-minimally coupled term is expected in any inflationary theory due to quantum corrections. The study of the systematic renormalization and analysis of quantum effects in the corresponding non-renormalizable theory is the main goal of the project.

Results and Impact Shared a 1hr seminar with fellow PhD researcher Jack Holguin, discussing for my part the paper "Problems with Higgsplosion". Atendees appeared to be convinced by our argument against the so-called "Higgsplosion" - which some had accepted as a theory until the talk.

Results and Impact Gave a joint interdisplinery talk with artist Arantza Pardo, at the exhibition of her series "The Unknown" at Yorshire Artspace. Discussed the aesthetic attributes of modern cosmology, to an audience of regional artists. A series of insightful questions after the talk suggest that I communicated these ideas well, and contributed to closing the gap between the arts and science communities in the area.

Results and Impact Did an interview for online music magazine Sonic Nutrition, regarding a music event I run in my free time. The event, "Anomalies", is aesthetically motivated by my research - and I discussed this at length in the interview. Where I've seen the interview reposted, the discussion of cosmology has always been mentioned - it appears to be the standout feature of the interview.
